Mary Undoer of Knots Church
Encounter the powerful intercession of Our Lady who unties the knots of suffering, confusion, and struggle.
About the Shrine
Mary Undoer of Knots Church is Asia’s first shrine dedicated to Our Lady Undoer of Knots — a powerful devotion that brings comfort, healing, and hope to all who are bound by the struggles of life. Inspired by the 17th-century German devotion popularized by Pope Francis, this church invites the faithful to entrust their “knots” — problems, fears, and burdens — to the Blessed Virgin Mary, trusting in her powerful love to undo them with divine care.
Here, daily prayers, devotions, and spiritual activities nurture the soul, drawing visitors closer to Christ through Mary’s help — whether through quiet reflection, the rosary, or the celebration of the Holy Mass.

History of Mary, Undoer of Knots
Mary, Undoer of Knots is a Catholic devotion that presents Our Lady as the one who helps untangle the “knots” in people’s lives — problems, sins, conflicts, worries, and difficult situations.
The Famous Painting
Mary Untier of Knots was painted around 1700 by the German artist Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner, and is housed in St. Peter am Perlach, Augsburg. In it, Mary stands on a crescent moon as angels present a long ribbon full of knots, which she patiently unties — the serpent beneath her feet symbolising victory over evil.
Origin of the Devotion
Rooted in a reflection by Saint Irenaeus (c. 130–202 AD):
“The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience.”
He contrasted Eve’s disobedience with Mary’s “yes” to God — teaching that Mary helped reverse the spiritual damage caused by sin.
In the Painting
- Mary stands on a crescent moon.
- Angels present a long ribbon filled with knots.
- Mary patiently unties each knot.
- The untangled ribbon emerges smooth and straight.
- The serpent beneath her feet symbolises victory over evil.
The Marriage Story
A popular tradition links the painting to a noble German family whose marriage was in crisis. A priest named Jakob Rem prayed before an image of Mary, symbolically presenting the couple’s difficulties as knots. The marriage was reportedly healed, and the family later commissioned the painting in gratitude.
Growth Around the World
For years the devotion remained local to Germany. It gained worldwide attention when Pope Francis, then a young priest in Argentina, encountered the image while studying in Germany. He brought copies home and promoted the devotion, helping it spread across Latin America and eventually the world.
Meaning of the “Knots”
Catholics pray to Mary, Undoer of Knots, asking her intercession to help untangle these situations.
